George H. Northrup – “Wary of the Unbearable Lightness”

He is counting on gravity
to keep himself grounded—
all of the gravities, really—

the husky gravitas
that guides each leaden step
with ineluctable authority,

the gravel tailings of our daily digs,
the gravitation of being to being,
and oh, the graves, the graves—

all of these required lest
he be suspended
in a vacuous place, spaced out,
adrift in the upper atmosphere
like a lost balloon.
