Mimmerus of Colophon
Who has heard of Mimmermus of Colophon?
Who could recognize his work read aloud?
And yet the ancients praised him with one voice.
Solon esteemed him as “a celebrator of pleasures,”
Propertius contended that in love
Mimmermus was more important than Homer,
and Trypanis proclaimed him
“the first hedonist in Western literature.”
Love was his only theme,
and his words resonate
like the taste of sunlight in wine.
