Issue 6 – Nevin

Alex Nevin

Mahogany

I carved
from mahogany
a cabinet.

Once,
I carved from dark wood
a mahogany cabinet.

In it
I placed
one bottle of red wine
one mickey of japanese whiskey
a stash of letters
bound by twine
a Microsoft Live Messenger server
and a Facebook server.
Once
I carved a cabinet
from mahogany.
from a single block of wood,
I carved a cabinet
with a frieze
of a Satyr
lain
and
bound
and held fast
by watchful
chaste Minerva,
her owl’s wings bespread
over the body of the goddess
behind her
the broken bodies
of
Amores,
dashed,
his wings plucked clean.
Doric columns
extend the length
and the many-stepped
stylobate
adorns the lower length.
The pediment
is dirty
with the ash and soot
of oft-burned incense.
