The story goes they can hear burrowing
Worms, yet in their fantastic tumble
The garbage truck is no deterrent.
And science says it’s sight that saves them,
But that watching, third-wheel robin, breast
Burning against the bashed-in hedge can’t
Foil their urgent fumble:
Two so intent on feeling the other move,
The world ashens.
Finally we can understand the animals
Beyond hunger or loss.
And because we know their desire,
We know the truth of hunger
And the beauty of loss.
