The Word

Thou shalt see thyself that all manner of thing shall be well. — Julien of Norwich, b. 1342

                                        If
you were not looking
would you find it?
If you find it, will
it be the it that you
were looking for? If
it is, will all/All be well
at last?

Retreat

She wants to carve her name
deep into the peeling trunk of
the remnants of the apple tree,
the oldest tree, the one
whose branches inter-mangle
one with the other, death-throes
of another century. Green
shoots, improbable, but al-
most visible, emerge at
its highest point. She hears
someone, some day, some year
saying, ‘Who was she?’
She hears a someone answering. ‘She
was one who carved her name where birds nest.
Where apples grow.
